National Heartworm Awareness Month

4/17/2025

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month. Heartworm is serious and potentially fatal for dogs and cats, but is almost 100% preventable! A cat or dog develops heartworm disease when they are bitten by an infected mosquito and parasitic worms are transmitted. Even indoor dogs and cats can be infected.

Our technicians will perform a heartworm test a
t your dog's annual wellness exam at Winterville Animal Clinic. If the test is negative, your veterinarian will prescribe monthly preventative heartworm chewables or topical, or a 12-month ProHeart injection. If the test is positive, treatment options will be discussed. Cats will also have a heartworm test before beginning monthly chewable or topical preventative medication.

Why is heartworm prevention so important? Heartworm treatment is long and expensive for dogs. Testing is hard for cats and prevention is key.

If you are near Athens, Georgia, book an appointment at Winterville Animal Clinic today to begin heartworm prevention for your cat or dog in order to help them enjoy a healthy and happy life  - free of heartworm disease!

This is such an important reminder—heartworm is one of those conditions that’s easy to overlook until it becomes a serious problem.

What really stands out is how preventable it is. The fact that something potentially life-threatening can be avoided with consistent, simple prevention makes regular testing and treatment a no-brainer for pet owners.

I also think it’s helpful to highlight that indoor pets aren’t immune. That’s a common misconception, and it’s easy to assume they’re safe when mosquitoes can still make their way inside.

The contrast between prevention and treatment is striking too—quick, routine care versus a long and costly process if infection occurs. It really emphasizes why staying ahead of it matters.

A great reminder to stay proactive and keep our pets protected year-round 🐾

Heartworm awareness is one of those topics that truly underscores the value of preventative care.

It’s easy to assume something won’t happen—especially with indoor pets—but this is a great reminder that risk doesn’t always look the way we expect. Mosquito exposure can happen anywhere, which makes consistent prevention essential rather than optional.

What’s especially important here is the contrast between prevention and treatment. Preventatives are simple, routine, and manageable, while treatment—particularly for dogs—can be lengthy, stressful, and costly. For cats, where treatment options are limited, prevention becomes even more critical.

Regular testing, staying on schedule with preventatives, and working closely with your veterinarian are small steps that make a big impact over time.

A timely reminder that protecting our pets often comes down to the habits we build before there’s ever a problem.
